Estimating Breast Cancer Risk

Your doctor looks at a wide range of factors in determining your risk for breast cancer. However, most of these factors have only a modest effect, and studies have yet to determine which are most telling. To get a rough idea of patients’ risks, most physicians use the National Cancer Institute’s Breast Cancer Risk Assessment Tool, which includes hereditary, demographic and medical factors. While this tool can’t tell you whether or not you’ll get breast cancer, it can help you estimate your risk.

What is a Breast MRI?

What is a Breast MRI?

Breast magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is used to screen for breast cancer. Often used in conjunction with a mammogram, it can help doctors spot the disease in its early stages, as well as assess the progression of previously diagnosed cancers.

Breast MRI is a safe, painless procedure that doesn’t use radiation and provides greater detail than ultrasounds and mammograms. Most procedures do require the injection of a contrast dye, which highlights certain anatomical structures and helps the radiologist to accurately interpret the results.

Preparing for Your Breast MRI

Preparing for Your Breast MRI

Breast MRI is most accurate during the week following your menstrual cycle, and it’s important to schedule your appointment accordingly. We will call you prior to your appointment to gather additional information regarding your medical history, existing conditions, and insurance. With this information, we’ll help you determine how you should prepare, what to do if you’re pregnant or nursing, and how much you can expect to pay on the day of your visit.

What to Expect During Your Exam

What to Expect During Your Exam

At the beginning of your appointment, you’ll be given a warm bathrobe and asked to remove jewelry, hairpins, and other metallic objects that could interfere with the MRI machine’s magnets. You will be asked to lie on your stomach on a padded scanning table, with your breasts positioned in a cushioned opening. Unlike mammograms, breast MRI does not involve any uncomfortable compression.

Once you’re in position, the table will gently guide you into the circular MRI machine. Depending upon the specific exam your doctor ordered, the imaging procedure will last between 12 to 18 minutes. During the entire process, one of our highly qualified MRI technologists will be standing by to alleviate concerns and answer any questions you may have.
